Video Production on the internet
Today the internet is the most cost effective piece of advertising
and media exposure you can get. It used to have one serious limitation,
the speed. The quick uptake of broadband has changed this and now
allows larger files to be delivered quickly on the internet, such
as movie files containing video productions and TV commercials.
Video production is now an extremely important part of what we
do. It allows a well formed message to be delivered anywhere in
the world, in multiple languages. Video production is now effective
on TV, DVD and the internet.
Delivering to the internet requires skill in compression, despite
the advances in broadband. Advanced compression techniques can
reduce the file size of a video production by more than 90%, making
it easier for internet users to download and view. Different file
types compress more than others and have varying degrees of quality
although the latest formats having been using similar or identical
technology and have almost the same results for the same file size.
Video Production file formats
The main file formats we produce for the web delivery of video
productions are:
WMV. The native format for video built into Windows
QuickTime. Built in Mac computers, one of the very original formats
and also available on Windows.
MP4. Can play on video iPods and mobile phones.
SWF. Native Flash format that is great for use when embedded into
Flash presentations.
On this website you will find all video productions are converted
to WMV and QuickTime so you can easily download them to your hard
drive for playing later.
Tradeoffs in Quality for Download Speed
In order to get file sizes down for internet use you must tradeoff
things. These are:
Image Quality. The image pay become grainy or slightly blurred
as the effects of compression become more extreme.
Frame Rate. We can halve the number of frames
played back in every second of video. This means the movie doesn't
play as smoothly but the halved file size may mean the difference
between effective delivery and an impractical file size.
Image Size. By reducing the actually viewing
size of the movie we cut down the amount of data that needs to
be compressed and stored. Sometimes this is very effective when
the movie becomes part of an nice page layout. But more people
wish to fill their screen with the movie and a small image size
isn't suitable for this.
